Types of Grating

Industrial applications require different patterns of metal grating based on your requirements. For example, the type of grating you need depends on your environment, load capacity and strength and safety requirements. At Argus Steel, we offer several different types of grating to ensure we have an option that fits your specific needs.

Welded Bar Grating

Welded bar grating is one of the most popular types of grating materials. It’s manufactured by welding bearing and cross bars at every intersection. Manual resistance or automated welders then form a rigid grid. Welded steel grating is extremely strong and well-constructed, making it ideal for industrial applications and equipment, especially if you need serrated grating.

The benefits of welded bar grating include:

  • Fully welded joints that create a strong construction.
  • A wide variety of surface options, such as serrated or smooth.
  • Uniform load distribution due to welding.

Press-Lock Grating

In contrast to welded bar grating, press-lock grating requires no welding and instead relies on interlocked bearing and cross bars under high-pressure joints. The interlocked bars are pressed into slots, creating a reliable and durable seal. Pressure-locked grating provides greater flatness and lower harmonic distortion at intersections than welded bar grating.

Pressure-locked grating offers:

  • A clean appearance.
  • Excellent flatness.
  • Strong, reliable lateral stability.

Swage-Locked Aluminum Grating

During swaging, aluminum bearing and cross bars are cold-formed together to create swage-locked aluminum grating. The result is a pure aluminum construction that is clean, modern, strong and well-engineered for various industrial applications. Swaged grating is lightweight and does not require protective coatings because aluminum is naturally corrosion resistant.

Swage-locked aluminum grating is perfect for:

  • Industrial projects where weight is important.
  • Marine docks, piers and moisture-heavy facilities.
  • HVAC and elevated platforms.

Riveted Grating

Riveted grating is made by joining bars with rivets, also known as mechanical fasteners, at each intersection. The result is a more open appearance than some grating types, but with an equally strong, well-designed build. Riveted grating is slightly easier to fabricate into custom sizes and is also extremely capable of carrying heavy loads.

Try using riveted grating in:

  • Field modification required projects.
  • Catwalks and flooring that require heavy-load capabilities.
  • Industrial shelving, protection and floors.

I-Bar Aluminum Grating

I-bar aluminum grating is a strong, well-constructed option made with I-shaped bars to create a grid effect. The result is a grating that resembles metal blinds and is capable of holding heavy loads while prioritizing ventilation and visibility. The recognizable I shape offers a high strength-to-weight ratio and can be very long-lasting, which many industrial facilities require.

I-bar aluminum grating is often used for:

  • Industrial staircases and walkways.
  • Commercial and industrial shelving.
  • Heavy-duty ramps and catwalks.
